Showerthought: my $340 'ultralight' pad popped on night 4 at Mount Rogers, and my $25 foam pad is still going strong
Everyone in my hiking group keeps pushing inflatable pads and calling closed cell foam a waste of pack space, so I finally dropped $340 on a fancy one for a 4 night trip on the Mount Rogers loop in Virginia. It got a pinhole somewhere near Thomas Knob Shelter and went flat by 2am on night 4, while my buddy's $25 blue foam pad from 2019 never failed him once. At what point do we admit the sleep pad reviews are just selling us weight savings we can't trust?
