Saw a guy at REI in Denver shake his head at my $200 ultralight chair and now I get it
He said his $30 foam pad lasted 9 years on the Colorado Trail while my chair strap snapped on trip two, so I sold the chair and put that $200 toward a quilt instead, has anyone else ditched their luxury camp chair after a cheap sit pad outlasted it?
A $6 closed cell foam pad from Walmart has been my seat for three seasons now and it still looks new. My trick is cutting it down to about 14 inches so it fits in the back pocket of my pack, and it doubles as a knee pad when I need to filter water or dig a cathole. The chair thing gets you because you sit in it at camp and feel fancy, but then a strap or a leg gives out and you're stuck carrying dead weight. Quilts are the right call too, way better use of that money.
