Ranger's tarp knot advice saved my tent fly last storm

Met a ranger at Yosemite who showed me a trucker's hitch for my rain fly after mine flapped loose at 2am. He said it's the same knot he uses on horse trailers, hasn't failed him in 20 years. Anyone else got a trick from a stranger that beat the manual?

I read an old Army field manual years ago that swore by the taut-line hitch for tents, but it slips in wet rope no matter how tight you pull it. The trucker's hitch is smarter because it uses friction to lock the load, not just tension on one knot.
