Just realized my tent stakes were the weak link after that gusty night in Denton

I heard a guy at the campsite next to us say he replaces every stock stake with 9 inch aluminum ones before first use, and after watching my cheap plastic ones bend sideways at 2 AM while the neighbor's tent barely moved, I'm wondering if anyone else swears by upgrading stakes before anything else in their kit?
