Almost lost a tent to a hidden seam leak in the Oregon rain

I was out near Mount Hood last fall and got hit with a solid two days of steady rain. My three year old tent, a decent brand I trusted, started letting in a slow drip right above my head. I mean, it was just enough to be maddening. I tried the normal stuff, seam sealer from the outside, but the rain kept coming. Out of ideas, I flipped the whole tent inside out in my garage when I got home. I found the leak wasn't on the main seam, but on a tiny factory stitch line for a gear loop inside the rainfly, something I never would have seen. I put a dime sized dab of Gear Aid Seam Grip on that one spot from the inside, let it cure for a full day, and it's been bone dry through three trips since. Has anyone else had a leak show up in a weird spot like that, somewhere you'd never think to look?

Sounds like a lot of work for a three year old tent. I'd just buy a new one.

But landfills are already full of tents.
