My grocery budget used to be a guessing game until I started writing it all in a notebook
Back in 2019 I was spending about $600 a month on groceries for two people and I had no clue where it all went. I would just swipe my card at the store in Boise and hope for the best, then wonder why my checking account looked thin by the 20th. About two years ago I started writing every single item down in a cheap spiral notebook after each trip, just the price and what it was. It felt silly at first, like homework, but after 3 months I could see that snacks and drinks were eating almost $140 of my monthly total. Now I plan meals on Sunday, buy mostly store brand, and I am down to around $380 a month without feeling like I am missing out. The notebook is beaten up and coffee stained but it works better than any app I tried. Does anyone else still do it the paper way, or did you switch to something on your phone?
