My $40 meal plan beat my $400 grocery haul from January

After tracking every receipt from last October to March, I realized my prepped bean and rice dinners in Portland cost $1.80 per serving while my spontaneous takeout weeks hit $14.50 each, so who else has found that boring consistency beats fancy variety on paper?

The "boring consistency" part really hit home for me. I did the same thing back in February with my meal prep, and it was wild to see that my $30 of black beans, rice, and salsa stretched into 12 lunches while one random poke bowl trip wiped out half that budget. What makes it click for me is that boring doesn't have to mean bland, I just rotate two or three spice mixes so Thursday's bowl tastes different than Monday's but costs the same. Plus, the mental math gets easier when you know your base meals are always under $2, so a $12 takeout night feels like a treat instead of a habit. Once you lock in that baseline, you stop thinking about food as a daily decision and just let the routine carry you.
