The hostel owner in Lisbon knocked $12 off my bed for doing my own dishes
Stayed at a little place in Alfama last spring and the owner, a guy named Rui, watched me wash my bowl in the shared sink one morning. He asked if I always cleaned up after myself, and when I said yeah he told me he knocks $12 off the nightly rate for anyone who does their own dishes and takes out the trash. I ended up paying about $19 a night instead of $31 for the four days I was there, just for stuff I would have done at home anyway. He said most guests leave plates stacked in the sink and it costs him a cleaner two extra hours a day. Does anyone else ask hostel front desks about little chores like this, or am I the only one haggling over dishes?

Wow, I read a travel blog where a guy got free breakfast for sweeping the porch at a hostel in Peru.
