That week I ate breakfast cereal for dinner every night in a hostel in Barcelona

I was in Barcelona for 5 days trying to stretch $40 total for food. Hostel had free breakfast from 7 to 9 AM, so I'd load up a tupperware with cornflakes and milk and save it for later. By day 3 I was eating dry cereal out of a coffee cup at 10 PM in the common room. A German guy asked if I was okay and I just said "budget traveling." He nodded and handed me a half-eaten baguette he didn't want. That baguette got me through day 4. Has anyone else lived off hostel breakfast for multiple days in a row?

That "budget traveling" line hit hard. Read somewhere that hostels in Europe actually expect people to do this, it's basically an unwritten rule.

Got offered a spot on a hostel sofa in Barcelona once for half price. Best sleep I had all trip, and the owner brought us free breakfast the next morning.
