Pro tip: I just realized I've been overpaying for airport food for a decade

I was stuck in the Frankfurt airport last Tuesday with a 5 hour layover and no food. I almost bought a 15 euro sandwich, but then I saw a cleaning staff member walk out a door marked 'Staff Only' with a packed lunch. I followed them down a hallway and found a small cafeteria with full meals for under 6 euros. It was for airport workers, but they let anyone pay cash. I've been buying overpriced terminal food my whole life. Has anyone else found these hidden spots in other airports?

Followed a cleaning person through a staff door? That takes some serious guts, man. Weren't you worried about getting yelled at or something? I can't believe they just let you pay cash like that. This feels like one of those secrets they really don't want travelers to know.

Yeah, a buddy of mine did something similar at a big chain hotel. He just walked behind a luggage cart guy who was holding a door, ended up in a service hallway, and found a tiny break room with a vending machine that had drinks for like a dollar. He bought a soda, but the whole time he was sweating, waiting for someone to stop him. It worked out, but he said he felt like a spy and wouldn't do it again.
