Just realized the ticket machine at the Chicago Greyhound counter cost me $18 more than booking on my phone
I was standing in line at the Chicago bus station last Tuesday and watched the guy ahead of me pay $52 cash for a ticket I had gotten for $34 online an hour earlier. He told me he does not trust putting his card on apps, so he pays at the window every time, and he has been overpaying like that for years. Does anyone know if other stations charge that same walk-up fee, or is it just the bigger city terminals?
Booked my aunt's ticket from Indy to Nashville last month and ran into the same thing. She wanted to pay cash at the counter so I went with her and the clerk quoted $47 when I had just seen $31 on my phone that morning. I asked the guy at the window about it and he said most of the bigger stations tack on a walk-up charge, but some of the small town stops don't because they barely sell enough tickets to bother. What worked for us was buying her a prepaid card at the drugstore and loading just enough on it for the ticket, then she books on the phone herself and still feels like she's paying cash. She's done it three times now and hasn't set foot at the counter since. Tbh that fee adds up fast if you ride a lot, so it's worth the extra step.
