I always thought hostels were for young party people until my 45 year old aunt booked us into one in Portland

She's 62 and dragged me along to the HI hostel near the Hawthorne Bridge. I expected loud music and bunk beds but we got a quiet room with two twins and a shared kitchen. Saved almost $200 over a hotel and met a retired school teacher from Ohio who knew all the best free hiking spots. Has anyone else had good luck with hostels for older travelers?

My 58 year old mom and I shared a hostel in Seattle last fall and it was honestly better than most hotels I've been in. We got a private room with a little balcony and met this couple from Sweden who showed us how to find the cheap ferry schedules. Plus the free breakfast had way better coffee than I expected.

Yeah @west.claire same - I used to think hostels were just for party people too but they're actually chill spots for anyone.
