Cracked open my hostel booking plan after a disaster in Lisbon
I always figured booking hostels way ahead was the safe move. Last month in Lisbon I reserved a place 6 weeks early for 45 euros a night. Turns out they had a last minute cancellation policy that hit me when my flight got delayed. I ended up paying for two nights I never used. The kicker was the guy at the front desk told me they usually drop rates 3 days out for unsold beds. Has anyone else had better luck booking last minute instead of planning everything in stone?

45 euros a night is way too much for a gamble like that.
