Can we talk about the "free" breakfast scam at hostels in Lisbon?

I stayed at three places over 10 days and two of them charged hidden fees for the "free" spread, like 3 euros for butter or 5 euros to use the toaster. Has anyone else found their bill got padded this way, or is there a trick to spot the real deal before booking?
