A hostel owner in Lisbon showed me the 3 day rule and it cut my food costs to 11 euros a day
I was grabbing the free breakfast at my hostel in Lisbon last month and this older guy who runs the place asked why I kept buying sandwiches from the corner shop. I told him I was trying to stay under 20 euros a day on food and he laughed at me (not mean, just like I was making it harder than it needed to be). He said the trick is shopping on day 3, not day 1, because that is when you actually know what you'll eat and nothing rots in the shared fridge. So I tried it, bought bread, eggs, tomatoes, and a bag of rice for about 6 euros, and it lasted me four days. The other thing he said was to check the back of the shelf at the market near closing, which is where the markdown stuff sits. And he was right. Twenty minutes of waiting got me a pack of chicken for 2 euros instead of 7. Anyone else do the day 3 shopping thing or is that just a Portugal market quirk?
