Painted my old garage ceiling black for $35 and it transformed the whole room

I was at a yard sale last summer near Spokane and this older guy was selling a projector. He saw me looking at his setup and said 'son, if your ceilings are white, you're fighting a losing battle with light bounce.' I never even thought about it before. So I grabbed a couple cans of flat black spray paint from Harbor Freight and hit the ceiling over my screen area. It's not perfect but the contrast is night and day. Anyone try a dark ceiling paint or fabric trick that worked better?

Honestly, my first attempt involved spray painting a drop cloth and stapling it to the ceiling like a giant black tortilla. It sagged in the middle and looked like I was watching movies from inside a cave. The paint job sounds way more legit, I might have to try that instead of my janky fabric disaster.

Haha a giant black tortilla, that's a GREAT visual. At least yours was creative, mine was just a staple gun massacre on my ceiling. I bet you could sell that as an "immersive cave experience" on Airbnb. But yeah, flat paint on the walls is the way to go, just make sure you don't get the cheap stuff or it'll look like a dusty chalkboard.
