That time my rice cooker died mid-dinner on a Tuesday
Last week I was making black beans and rice for 6 people, the cheap kind that takes 25 minutes. My old rice cooker just stopped, no warning, just clicked off and the rice was basically hard pellets. I freaked for a second because the beans were already done and everyone was hungry. Ended up dumping the rice into a pot with some broth and butter, covered it, and let it steam on low for 12 extra minutes. It actually came out fluffy, saved the whole dinner for under $2 in leftovers. Anyone else had a backup plan save a cheap meal when the main tool gave out?

Honestly I used to think people were overreacting when they talked about backup plans for stuff like this. Like just use a pot, how hard can it be? But when my instant pot crapped out on a Sunday and I had a pork shoulder half done, I learned real quick that improvisation is a whole skill. Your broth and butter trick is genius, I would've just added water and ended up with sad mush. Now I keep a cheap electric kettle around just in case, and I always have a plan B for any main cooking tool. It's wild how a $20 fix can save a whole night of stress and food.
