My grandpa showed me his 'depression soup' recipe in his kitchen back in '98, and it was just a potato, an onion, and a can of tomatoes simmered for an hour.

Honestly, that $3 pot of soup taught me more about making a meal stretch than any cookbook ever has, so what's the cheapest, most filling recipe someone's shown you?

Got to disagree on the cookbook thing. My mom's old Betty Crocker was full of cheap tricks. The pancake recipe uses just flour, baking powder, salt, and water. No milk, no eggs. You learn to make a meal from nothing by following those basics. A can of beans, some rice, and whatever spice is in the cupboard makes a huge pot. The old books showed you how to build from the ground up.

But who wants to eat pancakes without eggs or milk?
