Tried a vacuum mixer for mortar, ended up with a swollen hand

Used one of those $400 vacuum mixers from the Supply House in Akron to test a small batch. The suction pulled my glove in before I could react and it bruised the hell out of my index finger. Lesson is, keep your hands clear of the intake ports, even with gloves on. Has anyone else had close calls with powered mixing gear?
