That spiral brick column took me 9 hours to finish correctly

I was working a front porch job near Dayton last week and the owner wanted a spiral column, nothing fancy, just a twist. I figured it would take maybe 3 hours, but the coursing kept walking off line every time I turned the corner. I ended up pulling two sections down and resetting them with a string line wrapped around the form. It took 9 total hours including lunch and a trip to the hardware store for new line blocks. Has anyone else found a faster way to keep spiral courses from drifting, or do you just plan for the extra time from the start?
