Switched my mortar mix after 15 years of doing it the same way

Last month I was on a job in Cleveland and the brick just wouldn't hold. Old foreman walks over, tells me my sand is too fine for that batch. He had me swap to a coarser blend and add a little more lime. Damn if it didn't stick perfect after that. Any of you guys run into sand issues that messed up a whole wall?

Hold on now, is switching sand really that big of a deal? I've used the same mix for years and never had a wall fall apart on me. Feels like you might have just gotten a bad batch of something else.
