Why does nobody talk about the old guy at the nursery who keeps correcting plant IDs?
Yesterday at the local greenhouse in Fort Collins, this retiree with a cracked phone case walked up to me while I was grabbing a 'blue spruce' and said it's actually a Colorado blue spruce cultivar with a specific tag name, then spent 10 minutes explaining the difference. He was dead right but also kind of rude about it, so which matters more, getting the botany correct or keeping the community friendly?
Man, I used to roll my eyes at guys like that and just wanted them to leave me alone with my plant. But then I got into native plants and realized how much wrong info is floating around, and now I'm kinda thankful for the know-it-alls even when they're jerks about it. Still, there's no reason to be rude to someone at a greenhouse just trying to buy a tree, you can teach without the attitude.
