Shoutout to the spider plant cutting my neighbor gave me that I forgot on a windowsill for 3 weeks
My neighbor in Tucson gave me a little spider plant cutting in a mason jar back in April, and I stuck it on my kitchen windowsill meaning to pot it that weekend. Three weeks went by and I totally forgot about it, and when I finally checked, the thing had roots shooting out everywhere in nothing but tap water. I felt kind of bad because I figured tap water would kill it, but it looked healthier than the pothos I baby every day. So now I'm wondering, do some plants actually do better when you ignore them? What's the longest you've left a cutting in plain water before potting it up?
Neglect isn't some secret plant hack, your cutting just happened to be a spider plant and those things root in a puddle of mud. A pothos or most other plants sitting in tap water that long would rot or turn yellow, so you got lucky, not enlightened. Three weeks is also nothing, plenty of people root cuttings in water for months before they bother with soil.
