My neighbor told me to stop deadheading my roses and I was offended at first
I've been cutting spent blooms off my roses every single morning for like 2 years now. My neighbor Carol, who's been growing them since the 80s, finally walked over last Tuesday and said 'you're ruining them, leave the hips alone in fall.' I thought she was nuts. I mean, every gardening video I watched said deadheading promotes more flowers. But she pointed at my bushes and showed me how the stems were getting weak and spindly from constantly pushing new growth into October. So I stopped around the 3rd week of September this year and left maybe 12 hips on each plant. Now the bushes look way sturdier and honestly the orange hips are kind of pretty against the frost. Has anyone else gotten advice that went totally against what they thought was basic rose care? I'm wondering if I should ignore the internet more often.
