Just realized my grandma's old coffee can terrarium from 1998 is still going and my fancy glass one died in 4 months
My grandma stuck a pothos cutting in a Folgers can with some dirt and a plastic lid back in 1998 and that thing has been sitting on her windowsill in Cleveland ever since. I got into terrariums a while back and dropped like $70 on a glass jar kit with charcoal layers and fancy drainage rocks, and the whole thing got moldy and rotted out in 4 months. Her setup is just dirt and a lid, but she opens it once a month to let it breathe and that seems to be the whole trick. I'm starting to think half the stuff I bought was just marketing and the plants were fine without it. Anyone else got an old school container garden that outlived the trendy bought stuff?
That breathing thing is real. I've killed a bunch of sealed setups by never opening them. Now I just leave the lid cracked a little or pop it open every couple weeks for a few minutes and that fixed most of my rot problems. The charcoal and drainage rock layers are mostly upsell, a normal potting mix with some perlite mixed in does the same job. Pothos is also just hard to kill, it'll grow in a coffee can or a ditch.
