A guy at the Asheville botanical garden taught me one leaf trick that saved my ferns
Last weekend I was at the botanical garden in Asheville checking out the fern section when this older guy with a sun hat started chatting with me. He noticed I was staring at a sad little maidenhair fern and said, 'flip a leaf over, if it's got brown dots in neat rows, that's just spores, not a sick plant.' I had been pulling off leaves I thought were diseased for 2 years, which probably stressed my ferns out way more than any fungus would have. He showed me how the dots sit in lines along the veins for some ferns and scattered for others, and said most people freak out and toss a perfectly fine plant. I went home and checked my 3 boston ferns and sure enough, brown dots in rows on the backs, not a single problem. So if your fern has weird spots, look close before you panic and cut stuff off. Has anyone else been ripping off perfectly healthy leaves like I was? lol
