Tried pressing my own signatures with a $9 flower press and the spine came out fine
I was ready to drop $200 on a lying press last month but grabbed a cheap wooden flower press at a craft store in Erie just to see what would happen. The folds are a little softer than I want but honestly for pamphlet stitching it holds up, so now I'm wondering if I've been overthinking my whole setup. Anyone here pressing with something weird that isn't technically a book press?

That bit about the folds being softer than you want is the exact same thing my buddy ran into. He was binding these little zines and got tired of stacking textbooks on them, so he started using his kid's old wooden puzzle press, one of those ones with the big screws on the sides. First batch he clamped way too hard and got these deep dents in the paper, but once he backed off it worked fine for years. He still swears the cheap thing does 90 percent of what a real press does. Makes you wonder how many people are out here dropping real money on gear they don't actually need.
