Just realized my kid's glue spills make my bindings tougher

Many binders believe you need a super clean area to make books that last. When my little boy helps, his messy glue forces me to look at each stitch and fold. This close check made the spine on my recent photo album hold up way longer. We grab old maps from around the house for covers, and it adds a nice touch.

Actually, that messy glue might be doing more than just making you look closer! It adds a bit of family history into the binding itself, which I bet makes those books mean more years down the line. My aunt used to say that the best crafts have a story in the seams, and your kid's help is literally building that. Plus, using old maps ties everything to your home's memories, so the whole thing becomes a time capsule. Really cool how practical bumps turn into sentimental boosts!

When I was teaching my cousin to bind cookbooks, we used a mix of white glue and a bit of water to control the mess. From what I've seen, that method lets the glue hold well without soaking through the maps too much. If you press the pages under a heavy book for a full day, it helps smooth out any bumps from extra glue. Take this with a grain of salt, but those glued-up spots often become the most loved parts later on.
