The audiobook narrator switch split our group in half

We read a 500 page thriller last month, but the print version and the audiobook had different narrators for the second half. Half the group listened and half read, and we argued for 45 minutes about whose version was canon. I mean, one scene had a character die in the listening version but survive on the page, it threw everyone off. Has anyone else had a book club debate where the format itself caused a fight?
