That time a $2 thrift store book taught me more than a $40 guide

I was totally skeptical of this old book on gardening I picked up at Goodwill in Austin for $2, figured it'd be outdated. But it had a technique for starting seeds using a damp paper towel in a ziploc bag that worked way better than the fancy starter kit I bought last spring. Has anyone else found a random old book that actually beat the modern stuff?
