Old foreman's tip about preheating thick flanges saved my Friday
My last foreman, Dave from the Gary mill, always said to heat a 3 inch flange for 20 minutes minimum before welding. I figured he was just being slow and cut it to 8 minutes last week on a job in Joliet. Crack showed up right along the weld toe after 2 hours of cooling. Had to grind it out and redo the whole pass with a 250 degree preheat this time. Anyone else ever skip preheat and pay for it later?
