Rant: A guy at a game store in Denver told me I was 'playing wrong' for not min-maxing my Catan setup

I was at a local game cafe last month, just setting up a friendly game of Catan. This guy at the next table leaned over and said, 'You're putting your second settlement on a 6-8-3? That's a terrible yield.' He then spent five minutes explaining the exact 'optimal' starting positions, quoting win rate stats from some online tournament. It felt like he thought the only point was to win fast, not to have fun. I play to hang out and roll dice, not to solve a math problem. Has anyone else had a stranger give them unsolicited strategy advice that just killed the mood?

That "win fast, not have fun" part is exactly the problem.

But what does "fun" even look like in that kind of system... is it just messing around until you lose? The whole setup seems to punish anything but the most efficient path.
