Our 5 player Catan game fell apart when the robber got placed on the only wood hex 4 turns in a row.

Last Friday we had a full table of 5 people at my place in Denver and the game was going fine until turn 4. My buddy Jake kept rolling 7s and parking the robber on the same wood hex, which locked out two players completely. By turn 8 the two guys with no wood just checked out and started scrolling on their phones, and we ended up calling it at 9pm with nobody close to 10 points. We switched to a quick game of Codenames just to salvage the evening. How do you all handle runaway games like that, do you house rule the robber or just let it play out?
