The second year cookout crew in Denver hit different

My cul-de-sac had its first block party last June and barely 12 people showed up, mostly because I overplanned and nobody knew each other's names. This summer we did the same setup, same grill guy, but I made a simple signup sheet for dishes and let one neighbor run a cornhole bracket while another handled music. The crowd tripled to 40, and the food actually matched the number of mouths, so now I'm wondering what's the one thing that doubled your turnout between party one and party two?
