Why does nobody mention that a 6 dollar roll of painter's tape is all you need for a wall grid

I stared at the same bare 8 foot wall in my dining room for 7 months. Then last Tuesday I taped off a grid with cheap blue tape from Ace Hardware and suddenly I could see where everything should go. Ended up hanging 9 frames in one afternoon and it looks like a real gallery wall now. Did anyone else figure out their layout with tape first, or am I late to this?
