I finally hung real art in my living room after 4 years of staring at a bare wall

For 4 years that big wall behind my couch in my Chicago apartment stayed totally empty and I kept saying I would figure it out someday. Then my sister got me a $30 framed print from a local art fair for my birthday and I hung it with a level and two nails in about 20 minutes. How do you all decide what goes where, do you plan the whole arrangement first or just start hanging stuff and hope it looks right?
