Unpopular opinion: the June demo derby at the county fairgrounds is why I quit trusting a horn
Back in June at the county fairgrounds in Kalispell I watched a guy finish his hitch and test it with a horn instead of a coil spring, and the trailer let go in the parking lot. The safety chains caught it, but the tongue dug a groove about 8 feet long into the gravel and he stood there white as a sheet. I have built hitches for 11 years and I had been doing the same horn trick for years because it is fast and you can hear the clunk. What I missed is that a horn only tells you the pin moved, not that it latched all the way. Now I keep a short piece of 1 inch coil spring on my bench and slide the pin through it when I check, takes two extra seconds and you can see daylight if something is off. Anyone else got a cheap little shop trick that came out of watching somebody else almost get hurt?
