Tried using my angle grinder for forge welding instead of the press

I always thought you NEEDED a press or power hammer to get a good forge weld, but last week my press broke down and I had a job due. Figured I'd try my angle grinder with a flap disk to knock the slag off and get things tight between heats. Surprisingly, it worked WAY better than I expected, the weld came out solid with no cold shuts. I still think the press is faster for big stacks, but for small billets this might be my new go-to. Anyone else use weird tools for welding that actually worked?

Flap disks knock off scale but they don't tighten the weld like a press does, lol.

Yeah so I decided one time that since I couldn't find my hammer I'd just use a brick to tap a billet together. Let's just say the brick did NOT hold up as well as your flap disk did, it basically exploded on the first hit and I had dust and bits in my hair for three days straight. But honestly, sometimes the dumb ideas work out better than the smart ones, right? I bet your angle grinder trick is one of those things where you feel like a genius and a hack at the same time.
