The old tool guy at the flea market in Tulsa told me my hammer looked 'decorated' and I still think about it
Stopped at a flea market off Route 66 in Tulsa about 6 months ago, mostly looking for tongs, and this older guy running a tool table picked up the cross peen I brought along to show a buddy. He turned it over once, looked at the handle I'd sanded and oiled all nice, and said 'son, this hammer looks decorated, not worked.' I laughed it off at the time but then he pointed at the face and showed me all these little dings and chips I'd never dressed out, and the handle had a hairline crack near the eye I completely missed. He pulled out his own hammer, worn smooth with a handle black from 20 some years of hand sweat, and said a tool should show you where it's been. I bought a farrier's rasp off him for $12 and went home and actually dressed my face proper and rehung the head on a new handle. Now when I grab a hammer at a sale the first thing I do is check the face for damage instead of how pretty the wood is. Any of you got a flea market or swap meet regular who gives it to you straight like that?
