Spent 5 hours chasing a wobble on my anvil and it was a 40 cent shim the whole time
Set my 150 lb Fisher on a fresh oak stump in March. Dead flat, I checked it twice. Started ringing weird and walking about a quarter inch on big draws. I blamed the stump, wedged it 3 times, even re-faced my favorite hammer. Finally pulled the anvil up and one leg was sitting on a wood chip. One chip. Stuck a piece of roof flashing under it and it has not moved since. Anyone else got a dumb fix that took you way too long to find?
Did you check the stump itself for a high spot before you set the anvil down? I used to figure an anvil that heavy would just crush any little flaw flat, so I never bothered looking under it. Then I found a knot in my stump that was hard enough to hold one foot up just a hair, and that was enough to make the whole thing rock and buzz. Now I run a straightedge across the top before I set anything, and it has saved me a lot of wasted time.
