The new downtown connector is nice, but they buried the old green path

Rode through the new connector they finished last month. Smooth asphalt, good sight lines, proper curbs. But it goes right over where the old green path used to run behind the warehouses. That shortcut had shade, no cars ever thought to cut across it, and it got you from 5th to the river in 8 minutes flat. Now it's a gravel strip with a fence. I get why they built the new one, but I wish they'd kept at least a spur for people who knew the old line. Has anyone else watched a familiar route get paved into something safer but slower?
