Serious question, I put a tiny flag on my handlebars to feel safer in the bike lane and now drivers honk at me way more
Went to the hardware store two weeks ago and grabbed one of those little orange safety flags kids put on their bikes, thinking it would help cars see me in the lane on my ride to work here in Sacramento. First morning with it, three separate people honked, and one guy in a big truck rolled down his window just to laugh and point at it like I was a clown on a unicycle. I figured it was just a fluke, but it kept happening all week, way more honks than I ever got before the flag. My neighbor Dana says it makes me look like a kid and that's why people mess with me, but honestly I think the flag just makes me more visible and the honks are the price of that. The weird part is the flag does seem to get people to give me a bit more room when they pass, so I'm stuck between feeling safer and feeling like a target. I've tried wearing brighter stuff, tape on my helmet, all of it, but nothing has changed driver behavior this much. Has anyone else had a cheap little addition to their bike totally backfire on them like this?
