TIL that $180 I spent on an e-bike conversion kit was a total waste for my 4 mile commute
Everyone in this community seems to love e-bikes, and I get why. But last spring I dropped $180 on a front wheel conversion kit plus $60 for the battery mount, thinking it would fix my sweaty shirt problem on my 4 mile ride to the office in Portland. It did not. The motor only kicks in when you pedal hard enough, which means I was still sweating just as much on the hills. Plus the whole setup added 15 pounds to a bike that was already 25 pounds, so flat ground got harder. I sold the kit on marketplace for $70 two months later. My actual fix was leaving 15 minutes earlier and riding at a chill pace in a cotton t-shirt I change out of in the bathroom. Total cost, zero dollars. Has anyone else found that the gear made things worse instead of better?
