That time I ignored a $3 cable end cap and it cost a customer a whole derailleur
About 3 years back I was doing a tune up on a commuter bike at the shop in Portland and the rear shift cable was fraying right at the anchor bolt on the derailleur. I told the guy it needed a new cable and he said just cut the frayed bit off and send it, so I did like an idiot. Two weeks later he's back, the cable let go mid ride, wrapped itself in the spokes and bent the hanger and cage all to hell, $85 in parts plus labor. Now I keep a jar of 50 cent end caps on the bench and I put one on every single cable I touch, no exceptions. Has anyone else had a cheap part bite them later like that?
