Swore off quick links for 6 years, then a snapped chain on a Tuesday commute made me eat my words
I used to be one of those guys who would not touch a quick link with a ten foot pole. Every old timer in the shop I started at in Dayton said they pop off under load and you should just carry a chain tool and a spare pin like a real mechanic. So for 6 years I machined pins, fished plates, and cussed on the side of the road more times than I care to admit. Last Tuesday I was 4 miles from home on my beater commuter, standing on it at a green light, and the chain let go at the pin I had reused one too many times. I sat on the curb in the rain with numb fingers trying to press a new pin in with a mini tool and the plates kept walking sideways. A kid on a fixie pulled up, handed me a spare quick link from his bag, and had me rolling in maybe 90 seconds. That night I ordered a 5 pack of links and threw one in every bag I own. Has anyone actually had a link fail on them, or is that just something we all repeat because our first boss said it?
