Overheard a customer say 'it's just a bike' and it got me thinking
I was at the shop counter yesterday and a guy was picking up his kid's bike after a tune-up. He saw the bill, sighed, and said to his friend, 'It's just a bike, how can it cost that much?' I wasn't even the one ringing him up, but it stuck with me. It's not 'just a bike' to us. That $85 service covered adjusting derailleurs with precise cable tension, truing wheels that were a full quarter-inch out, and repacking crusty headset bearings. Every single part has a spec and a wear point. I think the public doesn't see the hundred small checks we do to make a machine safe and smooth. It's a skilled trade, same as a mechanic for anything else with moving parts. What's a good, simple way you explain the value of our work to someone who doesn't get it?

Consider how much you pay a car mechanic for an hour of work. You're paying for the same kind of skilled labor to make a complex machine safe. It's not just parts, it's knowing exactly how to fix them right.
