Just realized a chain wear gauge lies to you once the rollers get sloppy
I was tuning up a customer's commuter at the shop last Tuesday and the Park Tool CC-3.2 said the chain was at 0.75, so I went to swap it and the cassette was barely touched. Turns out roller wear can read as stretch, and the real number is the pin-to-pin distance, which you have to measure with a ruler over 12 links. Anyone else run into this, and do you trust a ruler more than the gauge these days?
Man, I was the guy who swore by the gauge for years and told people the ruler thing was overthinking it. Then I had the same deal happen, gauge said replace, new chain skipped on the old cassette, and I ate the cost of a free swap. Now I keep a ruler on the bench and only grab the gauge for a quick check.
