Had to choose between a quick fix and a full rebuild on a vintage Peugeot crankset

A customer brought in a 1980s Peugeot with a stripped square taper crank arm. I could either try to re-tap the threads for about $20 in labor, or replace the whole bottom bracket and crankset for over $150 in parts. I went with the full rebuild because the old French threads were a mess. It took three hours but the bike rides solid now. Anyone have a better method for salvaging those old French cranks?

Old French threads were a mess" - what exactly was wrong with them?

Remember trying to find a specific post in those old threads? It was like digging through a pile of random papers. You'd have to scroll through pages of off topic replies and inside jokes to maybe find the info you wanted. The whole thing just felt cluttered and hard to follow, idk.
