Certified torque wrench vs hub bearing preload, I picked wrong

Read a forum post last week from some guy claiming you can set square taper preload by feel alone, that a torque wrench is overkill. I tried it on a customer's vintage Trek, snugged the bolt until it felt right. Twenty miles later the crank arm developed a click, brought it back, bearing was starting to brinell. That old advice might work for some mechanics with 20 years of feel, but I've been at this for 4 years and my feel is garbage. Why are we still spreading this stuff in 2024, anyone else got burned by following old-timer tricks without checking them against the spec sheet?
