A little prep talk saves the whole day. Before you even grab the clippers, pull up your phone and show them what a skin fade with no weight on top actually looks like from the side angle. Most guys picture it way cooler than reality. I started keeping a few screenshots of cuts that went wrong for the same reason, and it works like a charm. They usually end up agreeing to leave at least an inch on top after seeing the back view. Saves you the frustration and them the regret.

Oh man, that's brutal. I had a day like that last summer and I just started telling them straight up that what they want doesn't actually look good on their head shape. I'd show them photos on my phone of similar cuts going wrong. Two of them actually changed their mind and let me leave some length on top, which saved the whole appointment from being a total nightmare.
